Visualizing Grammar: French Prepositions for Countries (Canva Worksheet)

Project Overview: Designing for Practice

  • Category: Visual Communication & Resources (Graphic Design Module)

  • Tool Used: Canva (utilized templates for visual organization)

  • Target Audience: Novice-level French students (e.g., 7th–8th Grade French I).

The Challenge: Clarifying Gendered Prepositions

Design Process & Visual Strategy

I used Canva to create a worksheet that optimizes visual information for K-12 learners:

  • Visual-Verbal Pairing (Design for Memory): Instead of simple text lists, the worksheet uses large, distinct flashcard boxes that pair the grammatical structure (e.g., Je suis EN FRANCE) with a flag or cultural illustration. This visual anchoring enhances memory recall.

  • Clear Visual Hierarchy: The high-contrast, rounded card design organizes eight distinct examples on a single page, adhering to the principle of using a grid layout to make information scannable for younger learners.

  • Authentic Context: Using illustrations of flags and cultural symbols (like the pagoda for China or the torii gate for Japan) grounds the grammar practice in the cultural context of the language, aligning with the goal of fostering global competency.

  • Immediate Practice: The fill-in-the-blank spaces (e.g., Je suis ___ CHINE) are placed directly beneath the visuals, allowing students to immediately practice the new skill while reinforcing the patterns established by the guided examples.

This project demonstrates my ability to select and manipulate visual technology to create meaningful, high-quality instructional artifacts.
